A lap of the new Sydney Motorsport Park

Sydney Motorsport Park

Following yesterday’s news concerning Sydney Motorsport Park we can now bring you an onboard lap of the new 4.5km Long Circuit.

V8 Supercar driver Jonathon Webb is at the wheel of a Radical sportscar and the new section of track starts at 1:03 into the clip. The 830m extension to the original Eastern Creek layout takes around 30 seconds for Webb to complete.

Will be interesting to see if now they will just run a north and south most of the time or still have the gp circuit open

New section looks like it’s set up for track days, as in to discourage overtaking. Nothing larger than a go kart be able to make a move on that bit.

It will be a major slap in the face for the circuit management if V8 Supercars decide to use the GP layout instead of the new long layout.

I’m with Dave. It kind of reminds me of the section at Bahrain they used in the F1 in 2010. Only difference being this has been retro fitted into an existing track layout, with a lot of constraints, rather than built into a brand new circuit.

Oops, perhaps somebody should have asked some officials involved in leading Australian categories about what they want in a circuit. V8 Supercars (and whatever supporting categories can be shoehorned into a two day schedule) will use the GP track.

Sure enough, V8 Supercars (and whatever supporting categories can be shoehorned into a two day schedule) will use the GP track.

This looks like it confirms that the main purpose of the new section was to be able to run two track days at once on the Short North and Short South layouts, and not for real motorsport.
