CaterhamF1 logo ends Team Lotus journey

CaterhamF1 logo

The Team Lotus journey has reached a symbolic end today with the launch of the new CaterhamF1 brand.

Speaking in the final Lotus Notes newsletter Tony Fernandes says it’s now time to move on, “With Team Lotus, I would have battled to the end if I felt it was the right thing to do, but when you take a dispassionate look at where we were it made absolute sense to start with a clean sheet, and Caterham has given us that chance.

“I think back to when I decided to start a Formula One team and I chose to start a team from scratch so that we could control our own destiny. It’s definitely not been the easiest path, but now it is our time – time to take control and make our own history.”

Fernandes also says he plans to take the Caterham Group on a similar pathway to McLaren, where road cars will be the backbone allowing the F1 team to prosper. “McLaren has made great strides in diversifying its business and I feel we should do the same,” he said.

“It just makes sense. You spend all this time, energy, money and brainpower developing incredible technology, what’s the point in restricting it to the race track.

“We want to bring this technology to the people. We democratised air travel with AirAsia and we want to the do the same in sports cars with Caterham.”

VIDEO: MINI WRC Team 2011 highlights

MINI WRC Team

MINI and Prodrive returned to the world rally stage with their Countryman WRC this year. In a staged re-introduction to the sport they took part in only six of the 13 events. Dani Sordo still managed to make quite an impact, with a third place finish in Germany and coming within 6.3 seconds of a win in France.

The MINI WRC Team has condensed its debut season into a sub-three minute highlights package, which can be seen after the break. Also included is Kris Meeke giving a brief tour of the MINI WRC cockpit.

VIDEO: 500km/h+ in the blink of an eye

On board with Steve Read in his Top Fuel dragster

Yesterday we brought you a video showing a Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 where the party piece was its rapid deceleration from 330km/h. Here, we bring you some on board footage filmed in 2009 showing the devastating acceleration of a Top Fuel dragster.

The dials you see in frame were added digitally for effect and we can only assume their readings are legit. First thing you will notice is how quickly the speedo moves from rest to 500km/h plus. On your second viewing pay attention to the fuel gauge and G meter.

Subaru BRZ coming to Australia in May 2012?

Subaru BRZ

Subaru Australia is set to announce plans to bring the rear-wheel drive BRZ down under, CarAdvice reports. It’s understood a limited number of BRZs will be offered from May next year. That means the six-starred Toybaru may beat the Toyota 86 to the local market.

Subaru has traded off its all-wheel drive only offerings for over a decade, so the BRZ will force a slight shift in their marketing campaigns. Marketing is marketing and we’re sure the Subaru PR dept will develop a way to ensure the BRZ doesn’t harm its all-wheel drive pedigree.

Bathurst 12 Hour

Bathurst 12 hour now with live TV coverage

Audi R8 LMS

Bathurst 12 Hour organisers today announced the 2012 race will have live television coverage for the closing 90 minutes on pay TV channel Speed.

The 12 Hour broadcast will start after the live coverage of the World Superbike event at Phillip Island on the same weekend. It’s expected the Bathurst broadcast will start at 4:45pm on Sunday 26 February and will remain with the race until the chequered flag.

“The Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour is fast becoming one of the premier endurance races on the motorsport calendar,” Speed Channel Manager James Harrison said.

“It is an exciting development for Speed to be involved in live coverage of the Event. February 26 is going to be a massive day of live motorsport on Speed with the NASCAR Nationwide series race from Daytona, the World Superbikes from Phillip Island – and the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour is the perfect way to cap off the day.”

Event director James O’Brien is satisfied the Bathurst 12 Hour continues to grow in momentum and says live TV is next step forward. “We have been targeting a live component on TV for some time and we are thrilled to be working with the Speed Australia team next year,” O’Brien said.

We also hear there is a very good chance the German-based outfit Black Falcon Racing will be bringing at least one of their Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 racecars to Bathurst for the event.

Add that to the return of current title holders Audi and an increased effort from Ferrari and we’re getting an event that will have increased competition for outright success. And that’s a win for everyone.

An official promo for the Bathurst 12 Hour can be seen after the break.

Niki Lauda’s 1974 Ferrari 312B3 on eBay

1974 Ferrari 312 B3 driven by Niki Lauda

A vintage F1 car, claimed to be Niki Lauda’s 1974 Ferrari 312B3, has just failed to sell on eBay. The car had a US$1.25m reserve and attracted no bids.

According to the listing the car offered for sale by racershop is chassis #15 and was used by Lauda to win the Spanish GP and Dutch GP.

The best part about the listing is the comprehensive image gallery. We’ve been a bit naughty and nicked a few of the pics to share with you all.

AMG Performance Studio fades from red to blue

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Once upon a time this pretty Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’ was a firery red colour. The AMG Performance Studio has produced a time lapse video showing the possibilities available to those with money to burn. If we were lucky enough to do just that we’d like to hope we’d pick a better colour for the SLS than Yosemite Blue.

Webber says Austin will be ace (and more)

2011 Australian Grand Prix

Mark Webber reckons the revitalised USGP will be a success and has given his seal of approval to the track layout.

“I think Austin will be a good addition,” Mark said. “The track looks sensational, they have done a good job with the layout, a lot of undulation and sweeping, quick corners which is always challenging for us.”

Although, he understands truly converting the US market to Formula One will be a tough gig. “It’s not a market that has been completely cracked but I think they will enthusiastic and they will be keen to have us there.

“Formula One needs to work a bit on softening and working a bit harder on education with a new audience.”

MINI JCW Countryman officially in the works

MINI JCW Countryman

It’s official, MINI will make a JCW Countryman. The image above shows a prototype undergoing winter testing in Austria.

The word is the JCW Countryman will offer a more tailored suspension tune, including a 10mm drop in ride height and an increase in power beyond the usual 210hp (155kW) we’ve come to expect from the JCW 1.6 litre turbo.

Sadly, it appears that Prodrive will have nowt to do with the development of this car. So, we can only hang in hope that a road going Countryman WRC is a possibility.

Mercedes-Benz SL Klasse brochure leaked

Mercedes-Benz SL Class

These delightfully grainy images of the impending Mercedes-Benz SL Klasse have emerged on the German Car Forum. It shows the new SL is equal parts spectacular and equal parts, well, pretty ugly. The front three quarter shot shows quite a well sorted design, striking a nice balance between simple and detailed. Whereas the rear three quarter shot shows Benz designers are willing to knock off early from time to time.

Judging by the text in the image above we could be seeing info from Benz in the next few days. It’s expected the new model will be a bit lighter than the old SL, but really, it’s all guesswork until Mercedes releases the official word.

How long does it take to stop from 330km/h?

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 will rightly be considered as one of the finest iterations of the 997 model range. Of course, a 911 is not all about outright acceleration. Although, as this clip shows, the RS 4.0 has plenty of up and go.

But what about its braking performance? Well, check the short clip after the break, with sport auto tester Christian Gebhardt at the wheel, and find out for yourself. Suffice to say it is bloody impressive!
