Time to Unleash the Beast. MINI Announces Pricing for its Two-Seater Helmet-Head

December 2 2011

See it. Drive it. Love it. The all new MINI Coupé is set to take the essence of go-kart handling to the next level.

Today MINI Australia announced pricing for the MINI Coupe to start from $42,990 for the Cooper S model, offering Australian customers an exceptionally competitive price point.

MINI Australia also confirmed the inclusion of the almighty John Cooper Works engine variant in the Coupé line up – set to join the Cooper S for a local launch in February 2012.

Not for the faint-hearted, the MINI Coupé offers thrills and chuck-ability like never before. Cutting-edge drive system technology ensures that the engine’s output and torque are generated with exceptional efficiency – and experienced with great intensity by the driver.

Offering unbeatable efficiency and intoxicating driving fun, the 1.6-litre power unit under the bonnet of the Cooper S Coupé combines turbo-charging, direct injection and variable valve management producing 135kW of power at 5,500 rpm.

Maximum torque of 240 Nm is on tap as low down as 1,600 rpm, and can be raised to 260 Nm using the Overboost function. The MINI Cooper S Coupé dashes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, offering a top speed of 230 km/h. These performance figures team up with an average fuel consumption of 6.3 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions of just 146 grams per kilometre – making the four-cylinder unit in the MINI Cooper S Coupé the world’s most efficient engine in its class.

MINI Australia’s Acting National Head, Matt Schmidt said the MINI Coupé will add a new dimension to the highly competitive sports coupe segment.

“While the Coupé has introduced a new element of design into the MINI Family, it embodies the brand’s true go-kart feeling with a whole new level of excitement, achieving the best performance figures ever recorded by a volume-produced MINI,” said Mr Schmidt.

The MINI Coupé is instantly recognisable as a typical MINI at first glance with the continuation of MINI iconography. However, the Coupé is the first MINI to adopt the three-box structure and is clearly divided into three distinct segments: the engine compartment, passenger compartment and the boot.

The clear horizontal structuring into three distinct tiers – the body, the wrap-around glass areas and the strikingly superimposed roof – is a typical MINI hallmark. However, the innovative “helmet roof” in particular gives the MINI Coupé a distinctive appearance from every angle.

To improve airflow at higher speeds, the MINI Coupé is the first ever MINI to feature an active rear spoiler. Integrated in the boot lid, the spoiler pops up automatically when the MINI Coupé reaches a speed of 80 km/h and retracts when the speed falls below 60 km/h.

The highly-powered and specified MINI Coupé is packed with standard features, delivering exceptional customer value.

Highlights across the two models include (but not limited to) the active rear spoiler, 17” light alloy rims, sport button, park distance control, Xenon headlights, sport leather steering wheel, sports seats, automatic air conditioning, MINI Radio Boost CD and Bluetooth.

Safety features include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Antilock Braking System (ABS) four airbags, crash sensor, Electronic Braking Force Distribution Control, twin horns, 3-point seat belts and a run-flat indicator.

MINI’s latest dare devils will arrive in Australian showrooms in February 2012.
