Supposedly this standard looking Polo GTI is actually a Polo R development model, Auto Express reports.
Back in May Volkswagen board member Ulrich Hackenberg gave a road-going Polo R some momentum when he said, “You can see how the World Rally Championship programme would increase the probability of an R version of the base model [Polo].â€
Since then Volkswagen has shown off the Polo R WRC at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The rally car is powered by a 300hp/350Nm 1.6 TSI engine, which gives us a bit of a clue as to the type of engine likely to power a road version of the Polo R.
We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that it gets a 4motion all-wheel drive system as well. We may have an answer in around 12 months or so with the Polo R expected to go on sale in late 2012.

A 6MT Polo R made in Germany rather than Mexico would be nice.
I read a report where it is just going to be styling add ons.

So I wont be holding my breath for all wheel drive…
R Line is just a set of cosmetic enhancements (think Audi S Line or BMW’s with M bodykits) and totally different to a dedicated R model. It will have little bearing on the final spec of a Polo R.
R Line is generally available across the entire Volkswagen range, but for whatever reason it is not offered for sale in Australia.
Start getting excited about 200hp+ and 4motion again!
Way, I’d like one in white with Anthracite wheels. Hold the tartan trim. Thanks.
Really if it comes i will be very fucken excitied!!!
The way i read the other page was we weren’t getting an all wheel drive.
But damn how will the price it?
It would be as much or more then a golf gti…
Mr Townsend, you can buy my Polo GTI now! White with anthracite wheels that looks indentical to the polo R rally car. All wrapped in nice tartans inside.
