Yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of Alex Zanardi’s horrific accident in a CART race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Germany. Despite having both legs amputated Zanardi returned to professional motor racing less than two years after his crash.

The permanent CART safety team performed miracles to even save his life; there was less than a litre of blood left in him when they made the transfusions that rescued him from the abyss. In typical Zanardi style he jokes that with all that German blood in him they should give him a passport!

I recently read an article about Zanardi’s approach to handcycle competition. It was facinating read. It talks about how Zanardi would tweak little things on his bike go gain speed, similar to the way a car racer give feedback to their engineers to change the set up of their race car. Good luck Alex, I certainly would love to see you competing in London para-olympics.
When I see people face adversity and over come it, it really is inspiring. His accident 10 years ago shocked me.
