The BMW 1 Series M Coupé is the darling of the moment, attracting headlines around the world. After our own test drive we can see why. So, it’s little surprise there is great interest in how fast the 1M is around the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife. Thanks to authoritative German mag Sport Auto and its latest Supertest with noted driver Horst von Saurma we now have an answer.
That answer is 8 minutes 15 seconds.
On the unofficial Nürburgring lap chart that places the 1M in some heady company. Here’s a shortlist of relevant cars also tested by Horst von Saurma:
- 8:05 – BMW E92 M3 (DCT)
- 8:09 – Audi TT RS
- 8:15 – BMW 1M Coupé
- 8:17 – Porsche Cayman S
- 8:20 – Audi RS 3
Von Saurma thinks the 1M would be faster if its suspension setup was better tuned for the Ring. Interestingly he also says the suspension is too hard for daily use.

And the last Renault Megane RS Trophy just signed 8.07 yesterday. This 1M time is disappointing for me, for a rwd.

Both those times are pretty amazing, especially the Renault.
Tony, if the RS is anything like the R26 R Megane I drove round the ring in April then I am not really surpised. Man they can move. The instructor I was with said that they can keep a GT3 honest in the right hands, excepting on long straights of course.
It is worth mentioning though that the car I had no rear seating, a half cage, racing seats with 5 point harnesses, sticky semi slicks and perspex windows. FACTORY. Excellent power to weight and good rubber.
Megane RS250 is an animal for a FWD, nice time from the 1M.
I was about to say that technology seems to show that when tight curves come FWD is the way to go, but you guys beet me too it.
Renault Megane RS 265 being faster than a RWD BWM M1 is outstanding, drifting is loosing time gentlemen and when tight curves come FWD has so many advantages.
