Here at AUSmotive we like it when the motoring and AFL worlds collide. So it is with keen interest we follow the news of Skoda Australia being named as the major sponsor for the 18th AFL team the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
You’ll be able to see the GWS Giants and Skoda more when the team enters the AFL competition in full for the 2012 season. There’s a full statement from Skoda after the break.
Å koda Will Be the Premier Partner of the Greater Western Sydney Giants AFL Team
Å koda Australia is proud to be a Premier Partner of the newly created Greater Western Sydney Giants AFL Team.
As the official car partner of the Giants, Å koda will provide the team with a fleet of vehicles. The fleet will include the popular Octavia and luxurious Superb models.
The Greater Western Sydney Giants are the first AFL team for Greater Western Sydney, with a bold vision to become one of the leading sporting clubs in Australia.
The Giants will galvanise more than three million people across Greater Western Sydney, as well as the ACT and Southern NSW, to support the Club providing exciting, fun filled family entertainment and a commitment to supporting the community.
The introduction of the Greater Western Sydney Giants into the AFL in 2012 includes the redevelopment of the Sydney Showgrounds Arena at Sydney Olympic Park.
The new team and facilities will offer the youth of Western Sydney real opportunities and direction. Children in Macquarie Fields and Blacktown already take part in the AFL’s Indigenous Academies and the new team will mean an expansion of AFL’s renowned social and community programs in Western Sydney.

Let’s hope that this does not lead to the Giants becoming like Skoda – The brand that could be doing so much better but just can’t quite find it’s way in the Australian marketplace.
This sponsorship should give Skoda access to broad market when GWS plays across the country in much the same way it did for Volkswagen when they were the official ball sponsor for the AFL.
