Ever wondered what you would do if your car caught fire and you didn’t know until it was almost too late. Imagine some Benny Hill music with this clip from last weekend’s Nürburgring 24 hour race and you could almost consider it amusing at first. That is, until you put yourself in the shoes of the driver, Evo journo Richard Green. This is one lucky escape and thankfully Green suffered no lasting effects from his dramas. The same can’t be said for the Lotus Exige, though, which ended up a molten mess.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to his exige. We were lapping around eastern creek and I was around 300m behind him. I could see flames coming from the back of the car, but he was unaware and I had no way of letting him know. Eventually he realised and pulled into the end of pit straight and the whole rear end was on fire like the car in the clip. The fire crew at the circuit managed to put it out. He was OK. Even though it was only a burrows drive day he was fortunately wearing his full nomex underwear, suit, balaclava and gloves.
Ouch, that would have been an expensive track day.
He was pretty keen to get out of that car. Obviously with no brakes it must have felt like an eternity for it to slow down enough to get out of it as he did.

I’d say the booster may have melted and no hydraulics?
