Word on the street is the new Volkswagen Golf R will be launched in mid-June. While Australian specs have emerged, there’s still nothing concrete on pricing, other than a hint at an entry level list price of mid-50s.
Should you get the manual or DSG transmission to go with your 188kW/330Nm and trick Haldex all-wheel drive system? I guess it all depends on just how important traffic light grands prix are to you, as opposed to the feeling of having control at all times.
If you’re undecided as to which way to go, below you can see a pretty rudimentary comparison below thanks to Autocar. It’s a bit crude, but the results on the 0-100km/h test are conclusive.

Great comparison and it confirms what I feel in the S3 – doesn’t make me want a DSG though
MASSIVE flaw in this ….the DSG is the lighter 3 door…..the manual is the 5door???
That’s a fair comment Dave, the difference in weight between 3 and 5 door would be around 35kg. But, the DSG probably weighs an extra 20kg compared to the manual box. So, there is a difference, you’re right, but it’s not really massive or worth worrying about in what isn’t a terribly scientific comparo in the first place.
Just checked out the Golf R brochure from the VW UK website:
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/golf-gti-vi/which-model/brochures
The weight diff between the two cars is 10kg.
3dr DSG = 1541kg
5dr manual = 1551kg
Note: That’s with 90% fuel and 75kg allowed for driver/luggage.
I want to see the tach at shift points in the 6M.
ok thanks for checking that out! i love the car either way so it is good to see the comparo – personally will still opt for the manual, dsg makes me feel too driven rather than driving it myself – have sampled in numerous audigroup cars and like it but dont love it
Only proves a point DSG will extract more performance than any driver can. I LOVE MY MK 6 GTI DSG but what i wouldn’t do to own a Golf R.
On my second Golf with DSG and just love it.
