Fifth Gear – Series 13, Episode 9

Oops, a bit late with this precis (Episode 10 aired last night)! Fifth Gear‘s Series 13, Episode 9 kicked off, as usual, with a shootout at the Anglesea track, and we saw the current hot-hatch du jour, the Mk5 Golf GTI take on the newly launched Subaru Impreza WRX. It seems the new Rex has been hit with a curse worse than the ugly stick. (See below for YouTube clip).

The it’s new but is it any good feature wasted a few valuable minutes of air time. Jonny reckons he can buy a used gem for 1500 squids and proves it, kind of, by showing us the Peugeot 406 Coupé, the Audi Coupé GT and an Alfa GTV. He didn’t really come to a definitive conclusion. No surprise there really, given the candidates. The Bentley Continental GT Speed is the cheapest 200 mile an hour car available for sale in Britain, apparently. A shame then, that with a high speed banked test facility at hand, VBH only managed a seemingly poultry 160mph. We’re given an all too brief look at the very svelte looking Farbio GTS, they say they will drive it in the next series, but, c’mon guys you had two of them right there! Tiff had a go in a rental Nascar, which was moderately interesting, but a bit like dancing with your sister as he wasn’t allowed to go at full noise. Tom told us the new Jag XF isn’t half bad and Jason Plato closed out the show in a Lotus Elise SC. He savages it. And, no, that’s not a good thing.
