MSO reveals Prost-inspired McLaren P1

McLaren P1 Prost

We’re going to start this post with a little rant. Such is the aura and legend of “the great” Ayrton Senna that you could be forgiven for not knowing that a little bloke by the name of Alain Prost won three of his four world championships with McLaren.

“Oh did Allan Prost drive for McLaren too? I thought only Senna did,” quips some kid who never saw either of them race.

For me, a proud fan of The Professor, the lack of wider recognition given to Prost’s achievements at McLaren has always sat uneasily in the shadow of the perennially increasing legend of Ayrton Senna.

So to see that McLaren Special Operations has prepared a one-off P1 “Prost” for this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is both a surprise and very welcome. Hitherto you could be excused for thinking McLaren was willing to airbrush Prost’s steady tricolour helmet design from the history books in favour of the flash of Senna’s brash yellow.

Thankfully, though, we now see before us an incredible P1 inspired by Prost’s racing colours and we couldn’t be happier to see it. Thank you McLaren, thank you.

BMW i8 tackles Goodwood FoS hillclimb

Now that the BMW i8 is on sale in Australia this video from the car’s first “dynamic” UK appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed takes on new meaning.

So what is this three-cylinder jobbie with electric sparkles really like? Watch this video to find out. It won’t give you a definitive answer, but it’s still worth watching, even if just to see the impressive line up of supercars the i8 followed up the hill.

We’d been waiting for video footage of Mark Webber driving the Porsche 911 GT1-98 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and now here it is.

There’s two clips and the second one from Goodwood TV has some good banter from Mark comparing the 911 GT1 to the Mercedes CLR-GT1 which he originally raced in competition against the Porsche.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed truly is one of the motoring world’s great events. It’s becoming increasingly important for manufacturers, who often turn up with world premieres, such as the McLaren 650S GT3 this year.

After the break there’s a collection of clips which showcase the diversity of the cars and drivers on show. Most of the clips have been sourced from the official Goodwood YouTube channel and if you have a spare 24 hours to kill you can watch all the action from the three days of the event.

Let’s start your week with a run up the famed Goodwood hillclimb course, filmed aboard the Porsche 918 Spyder at the Festival of Speed on the weekend.

The brief clip Porsche has made with titled “Sounds of Goodwood 2014” is a nice little treat as well.

Mark Webber was at Goodwood on the weekend and was tasked with the chore of driving the Porsche 911 GT1-98, with any luck Porsche will have some footage of that soon as well.

Red Bull is nothing, Porsche is everything

Porsche 956 at 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Porsche has released a highlights video from the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed showcasing its Le Mans heritage. It got us thinking, in Australia, the mainstream media just doesn’t seem to understand what a big deal it is that Mark Webber will be part of the iconic company’s return to LMP1 racing at Le Mans next year.

Of course, Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, we understand that. But Webber’s current employer Red Bull Racing, for all of the amazing thing it has achieved, is a minnow on the motorsport landscape when compared with Porsche.

Porsche is racing.

As the legendary Jacky Ickx, a six-time Le Mans winner himself (four with Porsche), says at the end of the video, “They make the soul of motor racing.”

Mark Webber will never be an F1 world champion, and that’s a shame for all Australian motorsport fans. And yet, by moving to Porsche, he has the chance to join the likes of genuine motor racing legends such as Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Hans Stuck and many more. All achieved so much with Porsche.

The best years of Webber’s career could still be ahead of him.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed has become one of the landmark petrol head events on the global calendar. Jenson Button has been lucky enough to experience the FoS for 14 years in succession. In this video from McLaren Jenson talks a little bit about what makes Goodwood special. Oh yeah, he takes some random bloke for a drive up the hill in a P1 hypercar as well.

2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed

For Porsche at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed it was all about the iconic 911 and its 50th anniversary. Here’s another 50-odd images from the festivities showing the many cars Porsche had on show and in action.

Porsche was also the manufacturer charged with installing the annual sculpture in front of Goodwood House. It was a trio of 911 models being thrust into the air. Quite spectacular really.

Jaguar F-Type coupe coming to Goodowod FoS?

On the same day it’s officially announced “an exciting new design study based on the Jaguar F-Type convertible sports car” will debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Fesitval of Speed new spy shots of the F-Type coupe emerge. Hmm, pretty easy to put one and one together on this one, don’t you think. Check out the gallery from Pistonspy using the link below.

We got a preview of what to expect back in May when drawings of the F-Type coupe were leaked. That simply confirmed that the 2011 C-X16 Hybrid concept is pretty much what the new coupe is going to look like. And that’s a very good thing.

The underpinnings of the coupe will be based on the F-Type convertible, of course, and that would appear to also be a very good thing. Talk of V8s, superchargers and special editions with lots of Rs added to the model designation is always exciting, don’t you think!
