Porsche: The gift of life

Porsche 914

Long-term readers of AUSmotive will know of our love for the Porsche 914. It’s a bit daft and a bit ungainly, but that just makes it uniquely cool in our eyes. We reckon after you watch this video you might begin to like the 914 too.

Many years ago the guy above, named Dave, sold his 914 to fund his wedding. His step-daughter thought that was a nice thing to do and now that’s she’s old enough to say thank you in a more quantifiable way she went and bought a replacement 914 to give to her stepdad for Father’s day.

Awww, isn’t that nice.

The forgotten Porsche?

1970 Porsche 914/6

Put up your hand if you love the Porsche 914?

/me puts hand in the air and looks around wondering why nobody else does.

I really, really love these cars. It’s true the 914 cannot be considered a conventionally beautiful object, but I cannot get enough of them. I think they look great and I love that the 914, perhaps due to it’s co-development with Volkswagen, is the runt of the Porsche litter.

There was a 914/6 racing in Targa Tasmania last week. I spoke briefly with the driver at a lunch stop in Railton and he told me his car had 370 horsepower and weighed just 1100kg. Tell me he didn’t have a fun week! It’s got flared body panels, sits nice and low and was easily the most interesting car in the field.

So, to Jack Griffin, who has his 914/6 featured in this Petrolicious video: You, sir, have an awesome car. Don’t ever let it go!

Bargain hunt

Porsche 914

Truth be told the Porsche 914 is probably a love or hate model. I happen to be one who loves its slightly oddball looks and revel in its equally awkward history.

This example above was recently passed in at a Shannons auction held on Monday. The expected price range was a seemingly reasonable $12,000-18,000. For more pics check out the Shannons website.

The pre-auction press release from Shannons can be read below, which includes a brief history of the 914 and how it came to be.
