Audi A6 Avant – Australian pricing & specs

Audi A6 Avant

Audi Australia has just launched the A6 Avant to the local market. They’re kicking off with two relatively modest four cylinder engine offerings: a 130kW 2.0 TDI ($82,900) and a 132kW 2.0 TFSI ($81,800). Both models are front-wheel drive and employ a 6-speed double-clutch gearbox.

The new A6 Avant boasts a 70kg weight reduction over the previous model. Yet Audi’s claims of being a lightweight construction pioneer are countered by the still slightly porky 1630kg kerb weight of the 2.0 TFSI version. Although, it is worth noting that makes the A6 Avant 140kg lighter than the heaviest BMW 5 Series Touring offered in Australia.

On paper, the power figures of the two models offered seem underdone, but Audi claims the 2.0 TDI can reach 100km/h in 8.5 seconds, while the 2.0 TFSI needs just 0.1 second more. Add to that fuel consumption predictions of 5.1l/100km for the diesel and 6.5l/100km for the petrol and suddenly the A6 Avant seems more than adequate.

Luggage capacity in the A6 Avant beats the 5 Series Touring, with 565 litres available when the rear seats are up, expanding to 1580 litres when down. But, the margins are so narrow you’d be hard pressed to pick the added space.

We’ve not confirmed this with Audi Australia, but we expect six cylinder offerings from the local A6 saloon range won’t be too far away for the Avant.

After the break we’ve the official press release and we’ve also prepared a few downloads for you as well. Ensuring you’ll have virtually everything you need to know about the A6 Avant right here at AUSmotive.

  • High-tech convenience and assistance features from the luxury class

  • Sleek design and lightweight construction make the A6 Avant an attractive lifestyle choice for discerning customers

The new Audi A6 Avant has arrived in Australia. It is offered with two efficient direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, starting at $81,800 (MLP). Sleek design, lightweight construction and a generous level of standard equipment and convenience features makes the A6 Avant an attractive lifestyle choice.

The new Audi A6 Avant sets standards with its low weight. With aluminium components comprising roughly 20 percent of the body, Audi – the global pioneer in lightweight construction – has raised the bar once again. Gross weight has been reduced by as much as 70 kilograms compared with the previous model. The A6 Avant 2.0 TFSI, for example, has a kerb weight of just 1,630 kilograms.

Audi offers two engines with direct fuel injection for the new A6 Avant: a petrol and a TDI unit. These generate outputs of 132kW and 130kW respectively.

Both of these power units combine power with pioneering efficiency – the fuel consumption has decreased by as much as 21 percent. The 2.0 TDI, for example, manages with only 5.1 litres of fuel per 100 km on average. Both units employ the technologies from Audi’s modular efficiency platform, including a start-stop system. Mated to both engines is the continuously variable multitronic transmission.

The luggage compartment of the new A6 Avant has a capacity of 565 litres, which can be increased to 1,680 litres by folding down the rear seats. Audi also offers a wide range of other practical and refined features as standard. They include the sensor-controlled, automatically opening tailgate: when the driver moves their foot underneath the rear bumper while standing behind, contactless sensors cause the tailgate to open. This feature is especially convenient when the driver has both arms full of luggage.

A generous standard equipment list includes Audi drive select and MMI Navigation plus. The high-end options include LED headlights, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats with a massage feature and an extensive selection of infotainment elements.

The brand’s high-tech assistance and safety systems lend even more confidence to driving. New for the Audi A6 Avant is the parking system plus with a 360° camera: this features four tiny cameras recording images of the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. The surroundings are displayed on the large on-board monitor in different views. The Park Assist feature will literally manoeuver the car into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, the driver need only accelerate and brake.

“The new Audi A6 is already an Australian success story,” said Uwe Hagen, Managing Director of Audi Australia. “It has won numerous awards both here and internationally and offers a 5-star safety rating with a very high level of standard specification. The A6 Avant will add a new dimension to the successful A6 family, offering best-in-class design, efficient engines and the versatility of a large, practical luggage area. It’s the ideal vehicle for active Australian families.”

The Audi A6 Avant is available for sale in Australia from June 2012.
