While we approve of the supercharged Toyota 86 rumour, this one we’re not so sure about. There has been talk of a convertible Subaru BRZ for a few weeks now and that suggestion was enough for self-tiled ‘automotive manipulator’ Theophilus Chin to get creative and produce this rendering of a topless BRZ.
Okay, we get that Subaru, and probably Toyota as well, will want to milk the Toybaru collaboration as much as possible to recoup development costs. But a heavier, less functional and poorer handling addition to the model range doesn’t really fit with the mission statement of the BRZ/86.

@ Mr Stubby!! ROFL!!!
They need the topless so they can take sales of the MX-5… which is the only it can really be compared too.
Low output – light weight.

As an ex MX5 owner, I totally see the appeal to a drop-top version. Sure, it might not quite handle as well, and it might be marginally slower (not a lot), but most of us drive on roads with speed limits, and police and … Driving to the car’s limits will usually not be possible. Drop the top and go for a sunny afternoon cruise and everything else pales in to insignificance. It might not be in keeping with the mission statement, but it’s a proven formula and Toybaru would be silly not to milk it.
Only thing that surprises me is that they’ve already announced it, ahead of any initial rush of sales/potential pre-orders for the hardtop.
Fair comments Mark, thank you.
