Volkswagen Australia Managing Directo, Anke Koeckler, has lifted the hopes of local Scirocco fans by virtually confirming the car could be a surprise arrival in 2011.
Speaking to media at the launch of the Polo GTI Koeckler said, “It’s an amazing car, and I love this car as well—that’s why I’m working on that.
“It’s probably more a matter of when [it arrives].”
It’s likely the Scirocco would be brought in R specification only, which means a front-wheel drive 195kW/350Nm engine spec, outstripping the Australian spec Golf R by 7kW/20Nm.
The Scirocco has been available in Australia for some time now, but only as a non-factory import via a specialist importer. It’s a gorgeous looking car, but has the hype died down too much and the horse already bolted? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

It’s great news! And even if they only manage to import the ‘R’ variant.
However I recently ordered a Golf R, had the Scirocco been on offer I would have walked straight past the Golf.
I guess it depends on the price point too. The sports hatchback market is getting pretty crowded these days (which = great choice range for the consumer), but this model would have to be the stand out of the range if they were to bring it.
Any word on how the sales are going via the specialist importer of the “Sir”?
I think it will sell, however the Golf R has filled the void to an extent.
I would’ve walked past my GTI and purchased the Rocco R if it had been available and if they can confirm its pending arrival I will seriously be considering a swap next year.
I really hope this is true, mm CW Scirocco R on 19s is sex on legs.
The only fear is that the launch in Aus will coincide with the end of the current model variant…..
If they bring the Scirocco out in Australia, I suspect that waiting time might be a big issue.
I’m now over 5 months into waiting for a Golf R, and I would expect the Scirocco R to be even rarer, with a longer waiting time.
Getting it in might help VWA in wait times with folk leaving the Golf queue to buy one of these.
Hmm…downturn in the UK means a few RHDs unsold? Or is it a bigger commitment than that?
Why will it have more power then the Golf R? VW said they had to limit the power in the Golf R because of our hot weather….
Hard to understand why the delay in bringing to Oz. Australian market – approx 25 mm people.
VW dealer in singapore has two models and they are selling – based on the number that you see on the street. Singapore market – approx 4.5 mm people.
So how does SIngapore get an in demand car almost 1 year ahead of Oz?
