Official teaser: BMW 1 Series M Coupé

BMW 1 Series M Coupé

BMW have made their first official announcement about the M-powered 1 Series. In doing so they have ended the “M1” naming speculation by confirming the name of the new hero model will be the 1 Series M Coupé.

The teaser video published today, available after the jump, features Dr Kay Segler from BMW M Division talking about the car. He’s pretty excited about it, using words like “we are here to realise dreams”, “you will not leave the car, you will not give the key to anybody else”, “you will have goose pimples” (yes, he really says that) and “it’s M pure, I guarantee that”.

BMW say they will confirm details of the 1 Series M Coupé before Christmas and European sales are expected in the first half of 2011.

Sounds very promising indeed. An abridged version of an interview with Dr Segler posted to the M-Power website can be read below, along with the feature video, of course. Also included are a handful of pics of the 1 Series M Coupé lapping the fabulous Ascari race track in Spain.

Interview with Dr. Kay Segler of BMW M Division

BMW 1 Series M Coupé.What might such a model be like?
This model will be based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé and also be focused on the essentials – the fascination of driving. And it will reflect a love of detail, too.

Will the model be called BMW M1?
We have discussed this point too. BMW M1 is a name with powerful historical associations. So we have decided to follow our second nomenclature method. In the tradition of the BMW Z4 Roadster and of the current models BMW X5 M and X6 M we will put our brand identifier at the end of the name, so our new model will be called the BMW 1 Series M Coupé.

When can we expect to receive further information?
We will be publishing more detailed information before Christmas. And we may release the odd detail beforehand. Wait and see!

Where will the information be provided?
You can register here on M-Power.com. In this way you can be sure not to miss any information on the BMW 1 Series M Coupé.

From when will the BMW 1 Series M Coupé be supplied?
You can expect the first vehicles to be with customers in the first half of 2011.

What else is in store in the near future?
There is a lot more for BMW M fans to look forward to in the second half of 2011 as well. We will be presenting the next generation of the BMW M5 with V8 turbo engine. But let’s talk about the details another time.

“Why is there nothing like this today?
All models grow, have more equipment features and options which can be freely chosen. Ultimately this is reflected in the vehicle dimensions, weight and price, too. This is why it is one of my most urgent goals to offer a small, affordable M model in the tradition of the very first BMW M3.”

Yes

I don’t think will be affordable in any practical sense, only compared to the high end performance market. In that case, it’s probably a bargain if it comes in under $100,000, because very little else outside the local offerings could get near it.

Very little else being an RS3.

Bet it is nobbled to stop it being quicker than an M3

The 135i alone is phenominal! A few more ponies, Upgraded brakes an a real LSD is all that is needed to make it one fine car!

Liam, I haven’t read those journo reports yet, but what I know is that no journos have yet to drive this car. They were only passengers, which basically means that they know nothing about how the car drives or handle to a large degree.

Yes, I’m aware of that. 😉

It’s still interesting to get first hand accounts of the car, even if the caveat of “we have to drive it first” still applies.

Yu wil arv guse-pimpuls

An awesome little car already ,just made better:)

[…] It’s no surprise then that Munich’s top brass is considering a new X4 variant, likely to be derived from the recently revealed second-gen X3. Proving there is no end to this apparent madness, suggestions are around, already, of an X4 M which could source its power from the 1 Series M Coupé. […]
