Volkswagen Golf R ready to make a splash

Volkswagen Golf R

The eagerly awaited Volkswagen Golf R is not far from its official Australian launch. AUSmotive understands it will take place in about two weeks from now.

Further evidence of the Golf R’s imminent release came via email announcing a new Golf R dashboard—it’s fancy RSS reader basically. When you customise yours, make sure you add AUSmotive to your list.

Other news confirming the Golf R is not far away is given in the small print of Volkswagen’s current end of financial year sale. For the Golf and Tigian range VW are currently picking up the tab for all on road costs. Obviously the sale ends on 30 June and the fine print reads, in part, “Promotion excludes Golf Wagon, Golf R & Golf GTD”. So, we’ll definitely be seeing the R and GTD before the end of the month.

Back in March AUSmotive brought you the first pics of a Golf R in Australia after it had docked in Fremantle. Expected specs for the 188kW hot hatch surfaced at the same time. It seems the only thing we don’t know is the price. Although, we’ve been told they will come in under MkV R32 pricing.

For those buyers in waiting, and fans of the R alike, here are 15 new images from the Volkswagen UK press archives. Click on the pics to launch wallpaper-friendly 2000px super images.

the only thing putting me off the R in those pictures are the VW Watercooled plates

The pricing will be interesting. VW is saying “lower than R32” but after specification differences may actually be higher for equivalent inclusions (e.g. leather)

It will be well built and look great, and I am happy for everybody who will have one in their garage, but the GTI is widely regarded as the better car.

GTI Widely regarded as the better car! I’m not sure about that. GTI is a great car but i can tell you for the 20 min drive I took in an R in Auckland left me with no dilema of whxi VW to buy…. One Golf R signed sealed and almost delivered. My cheeks still hurt from the 20 min Grin. The MK6 GTI, whilst great, just has something missing. Like Grunt and Grip!

Although I will get a GTI soon, I must admit I would rather have this baby as the performance will be much better, not to forget that you can chip this Audi S3 engine that the Golf R has and get another 100 horsepower which the AWD chassis can easily cope with!

These are already on sale down the road from me, and I’m seeing them on the streets. Pity they are $170k.

Its a 3dr so won’t take any sales from 5dr GTI. But the 3dr GTI might suffer.
